Best Fall Mountain Biking in Nelson, BC

Fall in the Kootenays can be the best time to ride

Cool mornings for the ups, moisture in the air creating hero dirt for the way down, and quieter than the summer.

There’s a good reason so many pro mountain bikers come from this area, and choose to make their homes here. If you are looking for incredible trails to ride there is a huge variety around Nelson, from the mellow green of Fairly High at the end of Silver King Rd, through the bermy goodness of Lefty and Turnstiles on Morning Mountain to the North Shore classics of Shitaker and Nooner.

Longer rides can be found in the mountains that soar above the west arm of Kootenay Lake, such as Shannon Pass and Vallelujah. Make sure your vehicle can drive the unmaintained logging roads, and have a retrieval organized, as it can be a long pedal back to the top! For those wishing to stretch their wallets as well as their legs, helicopter drops to Burn and Beyond will give a whole day’s ride down to the lake, and Retallack cat ski offers shuttles for mountain biking within their well-built network of trails.

The West Kootenay region has many trails to choose from in and around Nelson, within 30 minutes drive from our front door at the hotel. Our hotel manager’s favourite is True Blue in Salmo, a flowy downhill from the top of the Salmo Ski Hill in an up and coming trail network that seems to be added to daily at the moment.

Need to get your bike tuned up or pick up some extra gear? Nelson has amazing bike shops including The Sacred Ride, Gerick Cycle and Ski, SecretServiceCycles and more.
