Pee Wee Ellis was the architect of James Brown’s era – defining his classics of the late 1960s and on, introducing the dynamic arrangements and punishing rhythms that would define the emerging language of funk. Co-writing hits like “Cold Sweat” and “I’m Black & I’m Proud,” he primarily appears on the sax but also plays flute and trombone.

He has also worked closely with Van Morrison since the late 1970s, and has been featured on albums by the likes of Bob Dylan, Chuck D, Ali Farket Toure, Bobby Lester, David Grisman, Chris Isaak, Bill Laswell, George Benson, 10,000 Maniacs, Tom Jones, Aerosmith, Tom Fogerty, John Mellencamp, and of course his old bandmate Maceo Parker – just to name a handful!

In the 2014 biographical movie about James Brown entitled “Get On Up,” Ellis is played by Tariq Trotter of The Roots.
